During December of 1995 a group of six undergrad students from local universities of the city of Medellin-Colombia became aware of the hostile environment surrounding the children from the Guayaquil neighborhood and decided to provide them with a decent Christmas festivity. However, after experiencing a very warming welcome and infinite gratitude from the children, these young students realize that the problems faced by the children from Guayaquil were deeper than just the lack of gifts during the festivities. Then, they decided to found an association aiming at helping these children. That is how Poder Joven Association was born as a non-profit organization in July of 1996. Since then, two distinctive objectives were establish in order to help the population from Guayaquil: first, to become friends of the street children in order to motivate them to leave the streets and second, to teach moral and spiritual values to the chidren in high risk of becoming street children. The children from Guayaquil recognize Poder Joven as their families and as their best alternative for a dignifying future since more than six years ago.
