Karina lives with her mother
and one of her sisters. Her mother, Nelly, takes care of
their house when she is not out working as a house keeper
for another family. Karina is the youngest of six girls and
one boy. During 2007 Karina attended fifth grade but did not
do well enough to be promoted to the sixth grade. Despite
this setback, Karina demonstrates ability in the arts,
religion, science, ethics, and physical education. In other
subjects, such as math and English, she has more trouble. In
her spare time, Karina likes to stay outdoors playing with
friends.
Her favorite sport is
basketball and she likes listening to music such as
reggaeton (Latin hip-hop), electronic, and vallenato (traditional
Colombian music). As an adult she hopes to become a police
officer in order to protect her community. Karina notes how
her experience at Maren House has enabled her to become more
respectful toward others and have better communication with
her friends. She also says how much she enjoys all the fun
activities that take place at the House.

“Thanks ‘Poder Joven’ I learned respect, to ask for permission, not to harm
things, and to be a better person"
